2poor translation
By A Customer
This book is translated from German original, and since I don't speak German I do not know if the original book is good. This book (English translation) is very hard for me to read due to lots of translation problems and mistakes. Since there's not so many books on GDI engines, this is still a rare source on the topic, but I would recommend you read any review paper if you want to learn more about GDI engines (some are in Prog. Energy Comb. Sci).

2Not that great
By jstricke
I'm going to write the same review for all three of the ASE Test Prep guides I purchased.

To be honest, I'm not very impressed. I'm used to the study guides for the FAA flight tests which are generally excellent from everyone. These had typos in the questions. One question even said to refer to a diagram which they forgot to print! I also found several mistakes in their subject matter in the study section.

I think they are an aid and do help with the preparation but they publisher could have done a much better job especially for the price.

This is an older version of the book and is missing mainly the newest information on the diesel particulate filters. I brought this book with me to prep for the ASE test and passed it easily. This book provides valuable information and was key in me passing. I would recommend buying the newest version if you can afford it though.

4Computerized Management
By Dennis Swartz
This book has a good format and is based on the new technology that is on the diesel engines of today. I am a Technical College Diesel Instructor and i think this is the best book that is in print at this time. It covers all the engine families including the big three.

5Benchmark training pub for diesel techs
By Lance
Sean Bennett is arguably one of the most knowledgeable equipment technical author/educators in North America. This edition is his best; buy it, keep it in your tool box/shelf, and be happy with the money well spent. He's one of the rare guys that writes from a mechanics perspective; savvy with the most advanced technology but knows the legacy platforms as well. He knows what he's talking about.

The book is great, its required for my class.
The book covers a wide range of topics including several engine fuel systems.
my only complaint is if it covered the ECM of various OEMs alot more.
Otherwise its a great book, and well worth the investment.

3A little short of expecations
By A Customer
I'm one chapter away from finishing the classroom manual. I expected that the author would do an excellent job on the complicated topic of diesel engines, but fell short of my expectations. In all fairness, the author did an adequate job overall. He starts out with a bang in the second chapter explaining the different horsepower ratings such as HP, BHP, FHP and IHP. After that terrific start, the succeding chapters got a little less in-depth. I do like the fact that the subject matter is divided into two topics- theory and application. The classroom manual covers the theory and the shop manual covers the practical, "hands-on", side of being a diesel technician. Delmar does this with all of their Today's Technician series of books. If you are interested in a thorough approach with much better diagrams and pictures then "Diesel Technology" by Norman, Corinchock, and Scharff is the book to get.

4Lost a star for typos and noncontinuity, otherwise great.
By A Customer
I bought and read this book(it's actually two books, the shop manual is spiral bound, the class text is glue bound) in anticipation of buying my first truck. I'm not a tech so take my review with a grain of salt. The theory and general information seem adequate. There are a lot of detailed descriptions of repairs that are probably best left to OEM specific instructions. The end of the book was the most pertinent for me. It describes diagnostic tools and signs of trouble like smoke. I would have prefered more detail on the more/most common failures/problems encountered in used engines and how to detect them, though there was a fair amount of that.
The book lost a point for not doing a thourough job of quality control. There are a lot of typos and missing/misplaced words and such. Not such a big deal, but kind of breaks concentration while reading.
Essentially, this book did what I wanted it to. It described diesel engines in a way I could understand and gave me a basis for evaluating used engines, describing the tools and techniques involved, although I will have to study further to feel at all competent at such a task. So, it gets 4 stars and a recommendation as a good (and just about the only one I can find) basic, foundational book.

5Great Reference Material for ASE Test !!!!
By Moonlight Engineering
Not a quick read, has in-depth subject matter and text is very detailed with excellent illustrations. End of chapter questions somewhat difficult, however if you comprehened the material in the chapter you should have no problem in answering the questions. The questions are worded in such a way that it forces one to think, and even though there is no answer key, all of the answers can be found in the chapter material if you look hard enough. This is an excellent study guide for serious techs who really want to earn their ASE certification.

Download Ebook Diesel Engines: A Boat Owner's Guide to Operation

DIESEL ENGINESThis book is for the boat owner who is interested in learning the fundamental concepts of diesel engines and desires to minimize the need for expensive repairs and overhaul by proper operat delving into fundamental thermodynamic theory.Copious illustrations and step-by-step instructions are all part of the author's clear, well-organized method of presentation. The boat owner need not be an experienced mechanic to perform routine maintenance chores on his or her engine, and special tools are not required. The explanation of the basic engine systems and routine tasks presented in Diesel Engines, augmented by the manufacturer's operating manual, puts the actual accomplishment of these jobs well within the capability of even a nontechnical boat owner.

In this amply illustrated and straightforward guide, Leo Block, an old Navy hand, sets himself the formidable task of filling the gap between what you learn from your engine's owner's manual (almost nil) and what you find in the technician's service manual (far too much). It should be stressed that this book is not designed to teach the novice how to fix a broken diesel. The doit-yourself suggestions are strictly limited to the routine service procedures you'd find in the most cursory owner's manual: changing the lubricating oil, ensuring a clean fuel supply, replacing filters, bleeding air from oil lines, etc. The question arises, then, whether this book is filling a much-needed void. For pleasure boaters unsatisfied with a monkey-see-monkey-do approach to diesel maintenance, the answer is no. The value of this book, then, lies in its lucid explanation of the complex mechanical principles at work in diesel engines: the "why" behind the "do." While it won't turn you into a mechanic, it may just keep you from being conned the first time you sail into the yard for a tune-up. -- From Independent Publisher

5Nice book with nice price
By Anzhelika burkovsky
I bought it for just to know a couple parts here and there. I didn't buy for school use and i didn't want to pay the price for a new book because i was just using it for better knowledge since sometimes i order for truck parts. So i would loved to know a couple parts to help with my job. Since i work with semi trucks it definitely a great buy. Yes in this book was a couple writings here and there and notes of the person but i didn't mind that. I use it everyday happy i bought it but i did have to use a dictionary once in a while since i never studied before. Also it wasn't ripped which was the most important and i'm guessing it was somebody's present and then they sold it because it was signed. Anyway great buy and the book came in may instead of june. Loved that it was earlier than expected.

bought this book to study on my own to get certified.answers to practice questions at end of chapters are on some cd that they wont sell you unless you are an instructor. a valuable study tool denied. very unhappy that I bought this book. and that the author was short sighted enough not to include such an essential study tool. if I expressed my true opinion I'm sure they wouldn't post this review.

1not for beginners
By chris
bought this book to get a better understanding of diesel engines but after the first few chapters quickly realized if you are not already very familiar with diesels you will have a very difficult time understanding this book, the author does a lot of talking over your head in every chapter. you will have to be constantly jumping form chapter to chapter trying to figure out what he is talking about. it gets annoying, so if you are looking for a book to help you under stand diesel and get a bisic idea of what they are about this is not a good pic.

3Excellent intro to Diesel Engines for auto mechanics.
By Roger K. Mathura
This book is an excellent intro to Diesel engines, suitable for students of auto-mechanics, and do-it -yourselfers. It begins from basics, and goes all the way to the new electronic-controlled diesels. It shows systems from the major manufacturers, and includes small block designs. One drawback is the lack of color photos, but there are diagrams on every page. The book is worth its price.

4A good book to get an overall understanding on diesels
By Wayne Stan
Most of the book is great on getting a good foundation on how diesels and thier periphrial system work. Good beginning diagnostic ideas also. Some of the book has diagrams that are only a little help unless you have that particluar diesel engine. Good for anyone wanting to know how these amazing engins work. Forget almost all you know about gasoline engins. Diesels are very different and this book is good to read to find out how different they are.

By Amazon Customer
This has been one of the best books I've read on diesel engines. I'm not sure if it is a textbook, but is detailed like a textbook, but easy to understand. It doesn't deal much with the new diesel controls, but is a very good basic diesel book. I would recommend it as a first read for anyone wanting to learn more about the basics of the diesel engine.
