5NOT For VR6 Models!
By Scott
This book gives excellent details and descriptions on performing repairs, maintenance, and also has excellent safety, tool, and replacement part information to help the new mechanic famaliarize themself with the tricks of the trade. Excellent for young & old, and beginner & experienced owners. Also has handy conversion table. Be aware though, this book does NOT cover the VR6 engine! It's ONLY applicable to the 1.8T (Turbo 4-Cyl.), 1.9L TDI (Turbo Direct Injection Diesel 4-Cyl.), and the 2.0L (4-Cyl.), and NOT the 2.8L Narrow-Angle V6 engine. For those with a Jetta, this means it will not cover you for repairs on the engine in your GLX or GLS VR6. It is otherwise (even if you have a V6, the rest still applies) helpful for anything you could need really. I might recomend checking out the Chiltons, though their descriptions/directions can be kind of vague and hard to follow. Superb layout (fairly easy to find your way around), and excellent for routine, preventative maintenance if you want to keep your VW running smooth (and avoid costly repairs later on due to neglect).

3Ok for general repairs.
By Robert F
This book is no better or worse than similar books. OK for most general repairs, but lacking in detail in some of the most common trouble spots on modern cars, like emission and engine control systems. "Take it to your dealer" is the last thing I want to read in one of these books. Very few people are going to dismantle their engines and hone the cylinders, so why waste so much space on that?
On the other hand, most people are going to experience a "Check Engine" light, and that is where they need the most help. The dated, generic electrical diagrams in this book are practically worthless.
Some important and frequently needed details are overlooked altogether. Like changing the bulbs on the side marker lights. It was only through fiddling around with it that I realized that the lens was spring loaded, and by pushing in and then sideways, the lens popped out of the bumper.
Go ahead, buy the book, it is way cheaper than factory manuals. But join an owner's group online. That is where you will find useful information.

3Does not replace the full service manual
By CMH
I have both this book and volkswagen's service manual. If you do regular, simple maintance only, this book will suffice. If you change timing belts, serpentine/accessory belts, or more advanced work ... it will not be enough. You should buy the service manual as well. However, notice that I said "as well". It is far easier to find information quickly with the Haynes book than the service manual. But, if you need detailed drawings and explanations on how to do something, you will need the service manual. So, I use both in my garage.

Should you buy Haynes or Chilton. I'm not sure who copies who, but they are pretty much the same. Buy which ever is cheapest.

1Just not practical for the 6.0L or 6.4L diesel owner
By fatboytx
Why 1 star? Well I bought the book because I have a 2008 6.4L diesel and the cover of the book clearly states 1999-2010. I take exception to the cover. I think it covers 1999-2003. It doesn't take much more than page turning before you begin noticing that the book is more about the 7.3 diesel, the V10 gas and the 5.4L gas, than anything else. There are occasions where it mentions the 6.0L and 6.4L diesels but I think that it is more of an exception. As an example, I have yet to find any mention of the diesel particulate filter (DPF) in the book. It wasn't mentioned in the emissions chapter nor the exhaust chapter. How so? I'll look further but I frankly think its missing. So, I give this book 1 star because it provides some common torque settings but I don't find it a very useful repair manual for my 6.4L diesel. Those, with other older engines may find it useful. Just got this book today and I'll return and update this review if I discover that I am mistaken.

2The later in the year, the less useful this becomes
By S. Hall
I've picked my manual up a couple of times to look up information and was not able to find anything useful. I'm driving a 2010 Ford, and it appears the pictures and detailed text are for the earlier models within the date range. The 2008-2010 Ford SD series are often described as a small, final paragraph at the end of each section. The description for removing my dash panels is just plain wrong. I also could not find any detailed information where the grease zerks are on my front suspension. Both of these seem like very simple items to cover, so unless I just happen to be finding gaps in an otherwise wonderful manual, I think this is not worth it at any price for later model vehicles.

I might try to find a used copy of the 2011 series since these vehicles are more common to my truck than the earlier SDs (except for the transmissions and engines).

5Useful reading and good basic "Shade Tree Mechanic" Manual
By J. Cook
My friend has this manaual and I borrowed it from him... and after finding it useful, I decided to buy one for myself.

It does not cover 100% of everything you will need to know, but it does cover 100% of what the basic owner or "shade tree mechanic" will need or want to know (which meets my needs).

4Where I started
By bookscdsdvdsandcoolstuff
This book is one of the most important I have read in a long time. I really had a positive experience with it.

My wife started staying home to raise our growing family and I have had to find ways to save money and make it on one salary. The breaks were going on my car and I did NOT want to put the bill on my credit card.

A guy at Church told me that disk brakes were easy. I should do them myself. I bought this book, looked on-line for vehicle specific directions (Auto Zone has a GREAT website), bought a ratchet set and got to work.

My friend was right. I replaced brakes and rotors and bought tools and books at it cost me less than it would have cost at a facility to get the brakes and rotors done for me. Plus, I was equipped to do it again and again.

This brings me to my first criticism of this book. She doesn't recommend you do your own brakes; even disks. That is NONSENSE. I am deducting one star for this.

Anyway, what reading the book did give me was a pretty good knowledge of how a car worked.

Her directions on how to change oil are excellent. In my own learning curve, I did brakes before I changed oil. You should DEFINITELY change the oil and do the air filter first to build your confidence and see if you enjoy working on the car to begin with.

After doing my own brakes with success, doing my own oil, changing my air filter, and changing the PCV (EASY) I was HOOKED. My car was handling better than it had when I first bought it and I felt like the man!

Then, the check engine light came on on my mom's 2001 Suburu Forrester. The car was idling very roughly and even blowing some white smoke.

The car's warranty had JUST expired. To make matters worse, I had read online that the car was prone to head gasket problems, and when I plugged the symptoms and make and model into google I came up with a ton of very bad scenarios.

So, I drove her car down to Auto Zone and had them check the engine with the computer. This is a FREE service (go AUTO ZONE!) The guy at Auto Zone said the computer told him the problem was in cylinder three. I asked if this meant a possible head gasket problem and he shook his head and said, "Look; do cheap work first to eliminate simple possible causes. Only move on to the expensive fussy stuff AFTER you check the cheap and obvious. For now, change the plugs and wires and see what happens."

I had never done this before on any vehicle.

In the interim I bought the service manual for my mother's car, and found it VERY helpful, BUT, the directions on how to change plugs and wires are so thorough in this book that I barely needed the manual.

So, I got out my new ratchet set and got to work. With the help of this EXCELLENT book the work was doable if not easy. (Luckily my set came with a NICE spark plug socket!)

I got the job done, and at the same time did an oil change and checked the PCV. I unplugged and removed the battery to reset the computer (to get rid of the check engine light) and to help me get at the plugs (its a little tight in there).

Once the job was finished (it took me about 2 hours.... first timer!) I had mom take it out for a test drive.

She said it hadn't run better... ever.

The idle was smooth, all the roughness had disappeared. When I "read" the spark plugs (this book makes it EASY as there is a detailed guide on how to read plugs in the spark plugs chapter) it became clear that because mom only does short mileage runs in town for low mileage the plug in that third cylinder had become carbon fouled. The plugs were all fouled to some extent, but the one in the third cylinder was NASTY.

By now you can see what this book has done for me.

The author takes time to avoid potential law suits. She doesn't recommend you do your own shocks and struts (you can hurt yourself and need a strut compressor... you can get one here at Amazon) she doesn't recommend you do your own brakes (why?) she doesn't cover a lot of stuff.

BUT, if you read the book you will get a real good idea of how stuff works, get good advice about purchasing tools, learn that you can and should do your own oil, your own plugs, your own basic preventive maintenance, and you will learn how to speak to your mechanic in an educated manner.

I have gone a little crazy. I got the service manuals for every vehicle in the household and have read them for fun. I have done plugs, wires, brakes, pcv's, oil changes, chasis lubes on all the vehicles, and am about to do shocks and struts on one. I keep getting calls from the dealer saying (on my car with 100,000 miles and no warrantee) to bring it in for scheduled maintenance. Sorry buddy! My Chilton's manual has a more aggressive preventive maintenance schedule and I do all the work myself. I will keep the at least $300.00 bucks you would charge thank you. I have saved 1000s of dollars since I read this book.

I've also had FUN.

Well worth the purchase.

5Fantastic Manual for car incompetents as myself!
By SSchmidt
I love this book.
Let me start off by saying this. I know how to fill up my gas tank. I know how to pop my hood. Literally, that is the extent to my car knowledge. I don't even know how to change a tire. My father was an auto-mechanic and never taught his children anything, he did all the work for us. I always took my car to the local quick change to get my oil change. I have relied on everyone else to take care of my vehicle for me, and I have to trust their judgment and what they ask to fix my vehicles.
I am an accountant. I have great business skills, am technologically advanced beyond my years and can type 117 words a minute. I (not bragging) am quite intelligent and had a great gpa throughout highschool and college. I just don't know a blasted thing about vehicles in any form.

I was having problems with the battery in my truck a few weeks ago. It was just not getting enough juice to start. I would do everything I knew to do and had people come examine it to no avail. Some days it would start and other days it wouldn't. I was on my lunch break when my truck died, again. I couldn't get back to work. I called my supervisor (actually a very caring, understanding woman) and she sent one of my co-workers (very capable with auto-mechanics) to come take a look. He opened my hood looked at the battery and said "your clamp is loose, that's why your not getting any power." I looked at him dumbfounded. He then took a screwdiver, unscrewed something, and pushed a little on this clamp.

The truck started.
I finally decided that was the last straw. Something so simple had made me late and affected my job performance. If I knew even the basics about vehicles I could have gotten my truck started. But I didn't.
I went to work in a foul mood, determined to learn auto-mechanics. I got straight on amazon and found this book and knew it was for me.

Since that time...
I will no longer let anyone change my oil. I take care of all the fluids. I can change all tires, check the gauges, coolants, anything basic. I have decided I am going to take an auto-mechanic class at the local community college. I also want to build a little garage, and start small repairs on my own vehicles. I would genuinely like to take a clunker and fix it.

You can be like this too! I knew absolutely nothing about vehicles! This manual will even teach you how to pop open your hood and fill up your gas tank. We laugh at this, but some people GENUINELY don't know how to do this. It's ok! We all have to start somewhere! The manual gives detailed descriptions and accurate, simple pictures of everything you can do without seeing a mechanic for a serious problem. And the book will even tell you that you may be doing something out of your league, to go see a mechanic.

Listen, your car should be your best friend. It takes you wherever you need to go and you pray it starts up every morning. Why not take care of it? Literally, it will perform if it's taken care of. Not to mention, if you do your own small maintenance repairs starting now until the rest of your life, you have no concept of how much money you will save. Plus, it's fun.

If you have basic skills (typing, can change a lightbulb, count to 100) but don't know the first thing about a vehicle, this book is for you. It will spark your interest and give you a desire to learn about vehicles, teach you how to take care of them, and SAVE YOU MONEY.

I would recommend this book to anyone.

3Kindle edition is lacking
By AJP
This review is specific to the Kindle edition.

Many of the diagrams are cut off when viewed in the e-book edition. It seems like little effort was spent when translating this into an e-book. It would have been easy to put the diagrams sideways on a separate page, or at least scale them to fit, but neither was done.

Free Ebook How to Rebuild Ford Power Stroke Diesel Engines

Covers the vast majority of Power Stroke Diesels on the road. Each part of the engine is described and discussed in detail, with full-color photos of every critical component. A complete step-by-step engine rebuild is also included.

"This is a great deal because two different diesel engines are covered in the same book by Bob McDonald. Bob, a 20 year diesel specialist, also does gas engines and anything that comes through his doors. Covering Ford/Navistar 7.3L and 6.0L diesel engines, this is the book we have been waiting for to clear up the problems about these two engines. If this book saves you just once from making a mistake while working on either of these engines, what is it worth to you? If you do not rebuild these diesels, buy it for a person who does or someone who is just learning. They will be in your debt. Great job, Bob" (Mike Caruso engine professional 2012-10-24)

book listed in "16 Must-Have Products" (Diesel World magazine 2013-02-28)

"This book is full of tips from a seasoned mechanic. While it will never substitute for a factory service manual, this book is a great resource. The large full-color photos would even make this a great tool for service writers, helping them to explain a rebuild to customers who don't want to take on the task themselves. Ford fanatics will, of course, have to have one. It's worth adding to your truck manual selection, for the tech tips alone." (Trent Riddle Diesel World magazine 2013-03-13)

Diesel-powered trucks have never been more popular, and Ford’s Power Stroke family of Diesel engines have been a mainstay of the marketplace since introduced in 1994. While these engines are well known for their durability and longevity, they still require a rebuild at some point. How to best diagnose, repair, and rebuild these engines has been somewhat of a mystery for those without access to the factory manuals―until now. This book covers the vast majority of Power Stroke Diesel engines on the road, and includes the story of their design. Each major system used within the Power Stroke engines is described and discussed in detail, with full-color photos of every critical component. A complete step-by-step engine rebuild of both the 7.3L and 6.0L engines is also included. Also included are a wide range of engine building tips, charts, graphs, and information-packed sidebars to share even more information. Detailed graphics show the engine’s various system designs.

Bob McDonald is a well-known diesel engine expert. His is the owner of a diesel repair specialty shop and has more than 20 years experience repairing and rebuilding both gas and diesel engines of all kinds.

5Powerstroke Handbook
By Dr. Phil S.
This is a great book for all of us who do repair work on the Powerstroke engine. The book is filled with very sharp, clear color pictures of the interior of the engine. After I went through this book, I had a much clearer understanding of how the engine is manufactured, and insight into what is necessary to disassemble and reassemble the engine for repairs. This book will help tie together someone else's description of what is necessary to do a particular job, and I would not be without it. I would say this is a must have book for all of us who need to work on our engines and do not have the luxury of professional training. The book will probably save you a lot of unnecessary troubleshooting and work with the insight that you will get from it.

2Not a particularly useful book - nice pictures though
By Amazon Customer
Unfortunately, this book was a disappointment. It's hard to imagine what audience would really find this book useful. It gives only brief descriptions of steps so would be little use to a novice who wants to attempt a rebuild. On the other hand, the absence of any detail makes it almost useless to someone like me who has rebuilt multiple engines but wants to know some special tricks or things to look out for on this specific engine. I think the best use would be as a coffee table book to browse the beautiful pictures to get the basic idea of how someone else would rebuild your engine. Beyond the overall lack of detail, my major complaints are:
- There are no torques specs anywhere. Tolerance tables would also be nice but torque specs are a requirement for a rebuilding book.
- The performance section surveys just basic bolt-on stuff like air intake, exhaust, gauges, and tuning. A much more relevant discussion for a rebuilder is what engine modifications or replacements are recommended. Things like EBV delete, EGR delete, different injectors, fuel and oil crossovers, up-pipe leaks, and turbo options.
- The 6.0 engine has known reliability problems but can be made right with proper modifications. There should be a section in the books which describes what needs to be done for this engine during a rebuild.
- The product placements get old. One gets plugs for everything from gaskets and bolts to paint. Assuming the author got endorsement money, the book should have been nearly free.
That all said, I've never seen a rebuild book with so many quality pictures and the author does a good job of separating the 7.3 and 6.0 engines to remove any confusion. However, 2 chapters of the Haynes Ford Superduty Pickup repair manual has more information for a Powerstroke engine rebuild than this entire book.

4Money Saver
By Chris Ruggirello
I bought this book hoping to be ablr to get enough information rebuilding heads and installing up grades to my 6.0 powerstroke diesel. I have wrenched on gasoline powered engines here and there but never tried a diesel this was my first time with such a big job and the book helped me tremendously. I have the Haynes and Chilton books but this book was alot more informative than either of the other two. It gives you step by step procedures with color pictures that really help. I finished my truck and it runs great. For a beginner (with some knowledge of wrenching) to a seasoned pro this book should have something to offer.

This is another one of the manuals that I recently purchased from Amazon.com. This manual is from the same publisher, and just as good. These manuals are very hard to find, after looking in many auto parts stores and not finding them. I looked here into Amazon.com and was able to find them with ease and at a great price. The information that these books bring, is what's on the test. Many people are not aware of this, DELMAR makes it easy for you to read and learn from these manuals. You can't find a better source of information than these manuals. For a DIY or a serious Tech. these are needed in your shop as reference manuals...

1ST There is not of the info covered to pass this test. 2nd The "ase" questions in the back will ask a queston and the answer given will give a reference paragraph to find the answer, only problem being the subject material isnt covered in the paragraph. This happened to most of the questions. 3rd, there is more than 1 practice test which is great, only problem is the questions are related so closely to the previous tests that you know the answer before reading the rest of the question. I feel this would be a good book at a high school shop class to give students a very basic understanding of a diesel engine, but this study guide WILL NOT help you pass the ASE T2 test.

5Diesel Technology: Fundamentals, Service by Andrew Norman
By Jim w/ Amsoil
I bought the book to enhance my knowledge of diesel engines. I own two Cummins diesels and have many customers that own diesels. The book is well written, easily read, easy to understand, and well organized. Its a text book so a little previous knowledge with diesels is helpful. The information is presented in theory as most text books are and has a work book that goes along with it to enhance your learning experience if you wish to buy it separate. The end of the chapters also have review questions if your interested in serious learning. I would recommend this book to anyone studying diesel engines. Remember its a text book not a tech manual. The book was in great shape & I received it promptly when ordered from the seller. I would buy from them again.

1Misleading or cheating?
By F. Mo
I was looking for the textbook. The Amazon site lists "hardcover" and "paperback" versions. The paperback version is significantly less expensive. So I ordered the paperback version. It turned out that this "paperback" version is actually not the textbook itself, but the workbook for the textbook. Yet on the Amazon website, it is simply listed as "paperback" together with "hardcover" version. This is misleading at best and cheating in reality. The Amazon site should specifically indicate that this is the workbook, not the textbook.

5Nice book!
By Ivan Linaric
Very nice book, simple but thorough.
It's very easy to find your way amongst chapters a find a desired topic.
For example, if you want to learn about injector nozzels, just find them in contents and it will take you directly to it. All info in one place. No need to scroll thru the whole book.
Good for engine rebuilders and workshops.
Every engine part is nicely described and supported by nice illustrations.
Also there are troubleshooting, assembly and disassembly procedures with pictures.

Download PDF Marine Diesel Engines: Maintenance, Troubleshooting, and Repair

"Clear, logical, and even interesting to read."--Cruising World

``This is one of the best-illustrated engine books ever, Calder explains basic concepts in a thoroughly enjoyable way.'' (Ocean Navigator)

``If the reader faithfully follows the author's maintenance procedures, he may well find that he need never call upon the services of a diesel mechanic, and that alone makes this book well worth the price.'' (Sailing)

Nigel Calder, a diesel mechanic for more than 25 years, is also a boatbuilder, cabinetmaker, and machinist. He and his wife built their own cruising sailboat, Nada, a project they completed in 1984. Calder is author of numerous articles for Yachting World, National Fisherman, and other magazines, as well as four other International Marine books that have guided tens of thousands of boatowners worldwide--Boatowner's Mechanical and Electrical Manual, Repairs at Sea, Refrigeration for Pleasureboats, and The Cruising Guide to the Northwest Caribbean.

4Detailed and well written
By M. Mitchell
I bought this in conjunction with Peter Compton's book. I like booth. Calder is more detailed and more informative, but I find Compton easier to understand and more direct. If I have an engine problem I might start with Compton's book to narrow the possibilites down and Calder's book for detailed explanation. This book is somewhat redundant with Calder's "Boatowner's Mechanical and Electrical Manual" which is definitely a must have. Overall, great book and well worth the money. Would I buy again? Definitely

4Great Pics and troubleshooting
By Stephen L. Noe
Pics and explainations are top notch. The troubleshooting is good too. Not to many CAT pics mostly Volvo and Perkins, still the fundamentals apply across all diesels. Very Handy

5A Cruiser's Engine Atlas
By Reuben Gathright
This book provides the reader with a broad overview of most of the basic problems that can occur and offers simple solutions. I have recommended/loaned my copy of this book to several Diesel sailboat owners. The all remarked on how simple their repair was according to the book and how it save them $$.

I do find the book is a little lacking in coverage of large powerboat diesels, but the concepts seem applicable.

5Worth the money.
By Love to Read
This book is the ideal solution for those that are mechanically inclined and like to fix their own tools. The book is written very plain and simple language with excellent picture examples. I fix small engines but have always been befuddled by the two stroke engines. I have never fussed so much about fixing the things before, but this book breaks down the information with practical knowledge as well as theory on the operation of the engines. The book is well worth the money.

4Great, but read all the reviews.
By J. Rowan-Stern
The reason I say read all the reviews is so that you will discover that if you have absolutely no background with engine theory or repair, and you have never so much as replaced a spark plug in your life, you will probably find this book a bit more complicated if your trying to fix your weed whacker in two minutes. With guidance, sure you probably can muddle through areas that are applicable to you, but without basic operational theory, you will probably be looking up a lot of terminology and asking for assistance. If you have no experience what so ever, this book probably will be frustrating. If you have some background in combustion engine operation, you should be able to use this book and learn from it. I've read a few reviews that said the photos were of low quality, and not very helpful. Again, one reason some folks feel this way is that they may not know what they are looking at. The other reason is that it may be parts or assemblies from a different brands other that what they need help with. All in all, I think it's a good book to keep on your bench for that weekend tinkerer that has done some work on gas engines and understands basic theory of the same.

4A handy book to keep around.
By J. Post
I just recieved this book two days ago and I'm very pleased with my purchase. I'm so excited to find a book that is specific to my engine. (Ford 7.3L) I'm trying to learn as much as I can so I can save some money on repairs for my old diesel. This book will definitely come in handy! It has very informative diagrams and charts. Very helpful for people with very little wrenching experience. Unfortunately they included GM in the book, which isn't really necessecary for my situation.

4A good start (no pun)
By Kenneth Kaftan
OMG I think that this is the first item I purchased on Amazon years ago (July 2004 to be exact). Where it is a typical Haynes overview, it provides less than an in-depth study of these engines. More just the basics, really. Since this book was published there have been many new diesels and books for them to come out. If I can find it I will probably put it back on Amazon to resell.

5Good book and fast shipping!
By Sam
Arrived quick and was priced great. The book was actually in great shape; a lot better than expected. I purchased this for $6.86 as "Used - Acceptable" but there was nothing wrong with it. No dog-eared pages or tears. Very happy. As for the information in the book, i've not come across anything yet that it didn't explain with pretty decent detail.
